Trick questions in geography

1) If you go due south from Detroit, Michigan, what is the first foreign country you will encounter?

Answer: Canada. The next one would be Cuba.

2) If it's 5 PM in Tampa, Florida, what time is it in the capital city of Panama?

Answer: same time (Eastern).

3) Which is farther North, Crescent City, California or Windsor, Ont, Canada?

Answer: Windsor is further north than Crescent City.

4) which is the more northern: Halifax, NS, or Portland, OR?

Answer: Portland, OR

5) How about Portland, OR, and Portland, ME...which is more northern?

Answer: Portland, OR

6) What's the most western in the continental U.S.?

answer: If you're going to count Alaska, then you should probably count the Aleutian Islands; in which case the answer would be the island that is closest to the 180 degree longitude line while still being on the east side of it; that would be the westernmost point in the United States in any event, and the westernmost point in the Continental United States if you count Alaska and the Aleutian Islands.

7) What's the largest state (in area) east of the Mississippi River?

Answer: Georgia, at 59425 sq.mi.
Many people give New York or Pennsylvania as the answer, 54556 and 46055 sq. mi., respectively.

8) If you are going through the Panama Canal from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean (Gulf of Mexico, actually), what general compass heading are you going?

Answer: northwest.

another perhaps better link (http://www.tylersterritory.com/travel/namerica/canal_cruise/canal/canal-map.html)
it's a place where you could watch the sun rise over the Pacific and set over the Atlantic!

9) Which is farther north Moscow (Russia), or Edmonton (Canada)?

Answer: Moscow. But not by much.

Edmonton 53° 34' N,
Moscow 55° 46' N

10) How many different times zones are there?

Answer: As best I can determine there are 36. There are of course the standard 24 times zones (one for each hour of the day), and an additional 10 "political" time zones that are off by a half hour, and two more that are off by a quarter hour. I have yet to find a single website that lists all 36 in one place. China has one time zone from the Yalu River to Kashi....but they still keep local time, Kashi being three hours behind Beijing. Labrador is one half hour ahead of Nova Scotia.

11) What is the name of the place that is the first to see the new day?

Answer: Gisborne, NZ
Millennium Island, Kiribati.

The first populated land where the Sun will rise in the new millennium (and at the beginning of any other year) is at Kahuitara Point (44° 16' S 176° 9' W) on Pitt Island in the Chatham Islands, a dependency of New Zealand.

12) Which country is situated in the International Date Line cut through half for two time zones and two different days ?

ans: kiribati (also acceptable russia) not acceptable Japan
